Getting Back In Shape After Surgeries

It’s been about 7 months since my bilateral mastectomy and 5 months since my oophrectomy.  I’ve lost muscle mass, gained fat, and the scale has climbed. I was finally cleared for all physical activity in mid-January, however, it’s still slow going. Back to work, coaching, etc. Really eats up any time I might have for myself.

In January, I began to slowly get back into doing some exercise.  At first, I couldn’t even do one push up. My muscles were that weak. I could feel the strain and pull of the skin and muscle underneath when I did something as small as pushing myself up off of the floor with my hands from a sitting position.  I ran a half of a mile the first time I went out- albeit slowly.

It’s April now and I can do some push-ups (about 8 regular) and at least 10 more with my knees on the floor.  I am only up to 3.5 miles at a time. Although I am nowhere near where I was last year at this time (I was tapering off to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon at this point)- I am glad to be on the upswing of getting back to where I feel good again.

I will run 4 5K’s in the next couple of months, and the Pittsburgh Rock n Roll Half Marathon in August.  I am glad to have a goal to work towards. I am happy when I get out there and rack up a bit of mileage on my running shoes.
